I hope you had an amazing Xmas. We sure did! it was a scaled back xmas from times before but what was truly lovely for our family was all the thought that went into our gifts. We took turns unwrapping and making the moment last as long as we could. Our meal was divine and I am proud to say I outdid myself from years past. I channeled every great cook i knew and also a couple grandmothers for good measure. We had a Lemon white wine and Sage Butter basted free range turkey with gravy, Cranberry and cashew stuffing, new potatoes, Summer corn on the cob, garden fresh green beans. Xmas pudding was spiced stone fruit pie with caramel ice cream. My son had 3 helpings! The best was the SUN and i mean the most beautiful sunny day i have ever seen in Wellington. The day was amazing and dare i say perfect. Perfectly happy, perfectly simple, perfectly delicious.

This week we have been thrilled to receive box after little box of beautiful and interesting little treasures. Quirky and fine. Surprisingly all have this theme running through, bright blue, warm brown and vivid yellow. These are the colours of summer sky, sand and sun. I was really inspired by them and in a matter of minutes this display was born. I love it when that happens. it sometimes takes a lot of time staring at the boxes and putting up and taking down. But every so often it's like the items do it themselves :) and I'm just along for the ride.

Our last Lucy Dip Craft Night of the year was this last Thursday. I decided on three mini projects with a xmas theme. The first project was decopage ornaments using vintage maps, music sheets or text. (time 45 minutes) The second was wee gift boxes (time 20 minutes) and the third paper lanters for votives. (time 10 minutes for a set of 4) Thank you to everyone who joined our Lucky Dip craft evenings this year! I have had a blast and you all have made it so rewarding for me. To see the joy and excitment you all have had for my projects gives me heaps of inspiration for next year.

Next to the pleasantly plump red suited guy there is nothing more christmasy than a gingerbread house. And one turned into MAAAAAANY houses. Our very own wintery village. All 9 kgs of icing sugar, 18 egg whites and 10 kgs of lollies of it. I know it is NOT winter on this end of the world but no matter how long i have been here in this lovely country, come xmas time my mind is transported to what i grew up knowing xmas to be. So many of my expat Brits, Canadian and fellow American customers and friends have a real soft spot for that sort of thing so this years xmas window is dedicated to you all. Young and old. To your inner child with wintry north pole endeavours. It took three days to complete. And I treasured everyone of them. Doing this with my kids was truly something i will never forget. Memories and hysterical laughs (most possibly from sugar inhalation).

I hope you'll come over to have a look and if you are driving by at night...its all lit up then too.

Lastly, I looked up from my desk this afternoon to spot an old man with a cane stopped in his tracks. he gingerly hung his walking cane on his arm while he searched in his pocket pulled out an old school snap camera and took a picture of the window display. Then he slowly walked away with a smile. I don't think i have ever been so proud of a display. It really touched me.

Sew NICE!
After a year in our little fixer-upper of a house I have finally got myself a space carved out for a sewing room. We decided that there were enough beds in the house to accommodate extra guest without using the spare bedroom so it has been reborn as MINDY'S LADY CAVE! It is so lovely to have all my things organised and in one location that i don't have to pack away when i need to cook dinner. I was so happy at the end of the day when i hung the last item that i sat there at the desk and just smiled. I don't for one second assume its going to remain this tidy as anyone who knows me knows that when i create and go all at it. Materials flying everywhere. I like to tidy at the end. It's just how i roll. I wish i could be like friends of mine that tidy as they work. Funny i cook the same way. So here's to many happy weekends spent in my little room. I can't wait to paint it! but that will have to wait. We have more pressing matters around the house.

PLUNKET UPDATE: A massive Thank You to everyone who came out in support of our 4th Annual Charity Fabric Auction for Plunket Rongatai. It was a lovely evening filled to the brim with textile delights and many happy faces. I would also like to say a special thank you to the 15 designers and interior houses who gave so generously and to the cafes and restaurants that donated food. And to Dusty & Lulu the graphic artists that created our stunning poster.
On a sad note recently Plunket Rongatai lost it's Newtown Clinic this year to the new building codes for earthquake safety. As it was deemed unsafe and could not be fixed without great expense. Much strain and hardship has been put on our nurses and committee to try to keep in touch with the community without a Newtown base. They will be working out of the Kilbirne Plunket offices for the foreseeable future. We hope the money raised will help them in their biggest time of need. Lovely Lucky Dip Craft Night! this months project was embellishing ceramic white plates with sayings that have personal meaning. Everyone did such an amazing job i was highly impressed with the finished projects. I did however underestimate the skill level of this group as they powered though the project in record time but due to last minute no shows we had enough extra plates for some of the ladies to do two! There's always a silver lining :)
If you'd like to have a go at this project stop by the shop sometime and I'll fill you in on the process and where you can buy the materials. But for a demo you have to come to a craft night for those. And we only have two more Lucky Dip nights of the year. October is fully booked but November is open. So book now.

On Tuesday my flowers arrived from market lovely as always but there was, as there sometimes is, a few casualties of the journey. These little ranuncular heads were far too beautiful to throw away so i used them in a wee arrangement that you too can do at home with a few simple items.
The twig latice you will create for this will provide a stable prop for the heads to drink water. make sure your water level remains high. Check it every few days.

There is a little something i do at juniper, though small, it is special. I do this everyday and it starts my day off perfectly. I make my famous little $5 posies for all my lovely customers. Some of these go to people about to visit someone special but sometimes you can tell by the smirk on the customers face its just for them. And I think that is soooooo cool. Don't know if it was the footage from the hurricane Irene this last week or what but everything is reminding me and making me miss home...the US. Don't worry not enough to shut up shop and move back, geeze no way. but I miss cooking & crafting with my mom.
I miss laughing with my two best girl friends from school and I long for a Turkey & Swiss sandwich on french bread with a tangy ice cold dill pickle. I know i have been here (NZ) for so long and I am a New Zealander. believe me, I feel the same way about wellington after just a week of being away, let me tell you. But for some reason right now I am missin' HOME hard and it's all i can do not to pack a bag and fly away. Ahhh if only life was like that. For now i surround my shelves at work with things that make me smile and hope any minute my mom will walk through the shop door with a big smile and say "surprise!" sigh

We made them in all sorts of sizes and colours and then used them as brooches, headbands, and even topped gift boxes with them. So much fun to do and a great way to used little bits of flash fabric up.

This last weekend the hubby and I stole away to a lovely little bach in the wairarapa. The lovely owners of Providore Catering in Martinborough own a lovely place called "The General Store"

Running away on Friday we got to our weekend hideaway just around 2 pm and set out taking in the amazing scenery and warm inviting accommodation. We lit the fire, poured the wine and hung our jackets and cares at the door. (And even napped)

The house is set up among olive groves and slightly elevated so that you can see peaks of other little properties but still very secluded. The complimentary provisions were very generous. We loved traveling back and forth through the neighboring towns sampling the wares and cafes of the region. We had a wicked time at the Martinborough Hotel watching the All Blacks wip the Wallabies and feasted on beer battered fish and chips washed down with a pint of Emerson's Pilsner. The weather was brilliant for winter. Warm sun and lovely crisp breeze. It was hard to leave but had to come back home to our smiling kids and our sulking dog. Thanks Annie for watching the kids. And thanks mother nature for waiting to unleash the hail storm after we arrived home.

Sorry for the delay in posting these pics. It is school holidays right now and madness round these parts. Well actually these kids have been pretty amazing considering the weather and lack of planned activities by Mum and Dad.

Our monthly lucky Dip Craft evening was this last Thursday. We made Butterfly tealight lanterns from old jars and sheet music. The results speak for themselves. We had lots of ooohs and ahs and some made more than one. Thanks to all who came. Its was a blast and i always meeting newbies and seeing all you returning peeps. xx

This last weekend I celebrated my 37th birthday. What a lovely evening it was. With it being winter here in the southern hemisphere my friends and I were seeing less and less of each other due to the cold so decided to have a good ol fashioned Pot Luck. Boy oh boy was it a great idea! For one it was an affordable way to host lots of people. Also, I hadn't realised it but all my friends are exceptional cooks!

Saying Goodbye.

Saying goodbye is never easy. That is an understatement when talking about the death of a loved one or a friend. This is always a hard difficult subject to touch on but I feel some good can come from discussing these things before we are faced with them. Like birth, death is a part of life that I have had to help customers deal with over the years. Being a florist has with it some really delicate responsibilities that I take very seriously. My job consists of guiding my customer through the selection of flowers that best convey the sentiment but also the relationship with the person being given them. Some people know exactly what they want to give and say. It is in that case that I simply carry out the request exactly as they planned. But there are some who need a bit of guidance as to what to send and say. I am very happy to recommend appropriate sentiments and arrangements if it can help. So when you are faced in your life with having to say goodbye, make sure you are in a welcome comfortable environment. Make sure your florist isn't pressuring you to spend more than you can afford and or making you feel silly for asking for advice on how to word a message. It is your right as a customer to demand the very best service. My customers are a guest in my establishment and i celebrate their achievements and i sincerely grieve with them in their loss. Who ever you choose to help you through that time, when it comes please make sure you feel comfortable and welcome.

Well it's not the big reveal. It still needs a bit of pictures to go up and light fixture to be hung but the hard work is evident. 4 months has taken us from hard dark heavy wood to light bright fresh. The colour is Resene Gull Grey. If i may give any advice when DIY painting it's to DO THE PREP. Dust, clean, strip, SAND. clean again, undercoat, and tape. It will be worth it in the end. It takes forever AND it's not as fun as cracking a paint tin open and splashing on a coat. But it will wear well and look professional. I always try to cut a corner hear and there but there is my husband a arms length away with a look of disappointment (LOL) so i sheepishly go back to following protocol. Thank's Stu. Now on to the 6 other rooms. so that will mean we will finish in say...2013

LUCKY DIP CRAFT NITE PROJECT was soooooooo much fun. The group was so amazing and fun. We made embroidered bird fabric pendants. Everyone did a fantastic job. even the beginners were so fierce with their independent style and i loved each one for its uniqueness.

This weeks theme is "SNAIL MAIL"

yep god old fashioned cards and letters in the post.

There is nothing quite like it. when i get a letter or card i squeal!

It's much better than a facebook message or email and don't even get me started on txting.

I love that we are in an instant age but something that took time to pick out time to pen and time to send is so thoughtful and so treasured. I still write my grandfather and he me. I love getting cards from my mum. She is so sweet with her sentiments. My tip: get a shoe box and decorate it up. fill it with cards and stamps and pen and your favourite addresses. then on your next rainy day, sit down with a cup of tea and "work on your correspondence" as they used to say. it is indeed good for the soul.

Kiwi's get a lot of flack for wearing so much black but truth be told its just cool. But the key to really pulling black out of the "Emo" pit is to use the greys and silvers with splashes of white to lift it a bit. Apologies for the lack of posts.
The last month has been ,to say the least, a sad and trying time for not only our family due the Christchurch quake but I have been also plagued by a series of unfortunate health issues. I'm on the mend now. Our family in Christchurch although they have lost their home they are safe and together. I feel very fortunate. I would like to remind everyone to give generously to any quake relief they feel comfortable with. Give what you can afford and give regularly. Stay safe, buy an earthquake kit and have a plan.

Mindy's Deep Forest Pie

2 cups pitted cherries

1 cup blackberries

1 cup blueberries

1/2 cup of sugar (more if you like sweeter)

block of dark chocolate (grated) Whitakers is best:)

4 egg whites

400 gms (2 pottles) cream freiche (or light cream cheese)

1 tsp vanilla

1 pack of cameo creme biscuts crushed for crust (or any dry choc biscut)

2 tblsp margerine melted

Beat cream freiche, vanilla and sugar till smooth, fold in the berries and chocolate.

In a separate bowl wip eggwhites only till stiff peaks form.

Fold berry mixture in. careful not to over mix egg whites. Set asside.

Then in food processor or bag crumble the biscuts add the melted butter to biscuts. press into a pie dish. fill with berry mix and add etra choc to the top. Set in fridge one hour.

add fresh berries ontop for garnish. these can also be done as individual servings in glasses or ramakins.

So Satuday was spent painting the begining of what will be my valentines window. when all of a sudden it was closing and I hadn't gotten half way. So i will finish Sunday but what cracked me up was Gretta playing in the frames i painted. LOL man that kid cracks me up. I can't wait till the job is done and I hope you'll like it. no stickers used in this one all hand painted.

Here I am! I have not fallen into a crack I have been busy busy working on the new (old) house we purchased back in October. We elected to go away later in the year and use our holidays to tackle the garden and the first installments of DIY. The FIRST PHOTO is of the entry way before the SECOND white photo is of the entry was right now with the primmer on. We agonised over painting the wood but the space was too small for all that dark wood. We elected to show the main feature and brighten the space. I chose the Entry way/ main hallway was the first project to attack as it is, to me, the "first breath of a conversation". It's also the most intricate and complex with all the turned wood features and angles and monster surface issues. So far it is really exhausting. The wall paper striping alone took 5 days to complete. then the filling and surface prep took and another 5 days and now we are at the priming undercoating before the paint. this stage has taken 3 days so all up we have amassed 13 x 12 hours days. Sore does not even begin to describe my condition. But progress made everyday brings us closer and we can see the amazing potential our little Victorian gem has. I am very excited to show you once we have painted!

What a LOVELY night!!! Sunday Juniper hosted the 3rd annual fabric auction for Newtown Plunket.

Firstly, the fabric was TO DIE FOR this year, amazing! the designers and design houses who donated really outdid themselves and gave from the heart. The team at Newtown Plunket BANDED together like never before to pull off (in the face of allot of bumps in the road) the BEST fabric auction yet. Not necessarily because of how much we raised but the quality of the event. the enjoyment and smoothness of it. Aesthetically pleasing, ease of departments and the addition of eftpos made it a huge success.

In all we raised nearly $3500 this year. Again I am so proud to be a part of the team that made this event happen. A special thanks also goes to Sandwich Place (Lynchgate Mall in Newtown) for the lovely food,Jude Varcoe who was my right hand lady and Plunket GO TO gal all the way.

Samantha (amazing as always) AND last but not least my gorgeous darling daughter Gretta who was so helpful and conducted herself with poise and grace on the night and was looking after all us ladies. I was so proud.

Mary Potter hospice Fabric a Brac was Saturday at Newtown's Saint Ann's Hall. I was asked to speak at two one hour long demos for ideas of what to do with srap fabric. So with a xmas in mind I came up with xmas tree door stops, re invented flax kete to use for gift baskets, and for a project to do with the kids turning recycled food cans into pencil cups. I had a great time and I so enjoyed meeting all the lovely ladies that attended. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.

Miss Gretta turned 10 this last weekend. We had a lovely time. All the girls stayed over for a sleepover and awoke to breakfast sammies and oj. It will definately take me another year before I can do again as they were giggling an carrying on till 4am!
It seems like just yesterday that she was in pigtails scribbling with crayons on a little school desk in the corner of the old shop. Now she's workin' the till and answering phones.

This last week was the last Lucky dip project nite of the year. Appropriately it was XMAS themed. We did "Reccession Chic" ornaments and decorations for the home using foil glue and glitter. Simply done but beautiful. give it a go. 5meters of foil will yeild you dozens and dozens so it's great value for money.

We played with knives!!! and no one was harmed. Our project this month was stenciled craft paper on canvas. Clever little sayings cut from lovely craft paper pasted onto standard canvases. Easy and fun.

My "not -so-little" guy Ethan turned 7 this last week. Man time is flying. It was a lovely party. musical chairs, pass the parcel, face paint ala-mindy and the good old fashioned "run around while eating cuz our parents don't care-game". Ha ha check out my concentration face while applying face paint. So funny, its alot of pressure cuz all the little kids gather around and watch intently. So funny. It was great time at the local community center which was cheap, safe, easy to clean and no stress. I highly recomend it.

He wanted a WORLD CUP themed cake. We found it impossible to get little soccer figures so we used lego men from his toy box.

This Month Lucky Dip Project was
Paper party decorations.
I love newspaper it is cheep/ sometimes free next day :) and endless in supply. You can try all these ideas even using recycled gift wrap, Japanese paper, silk or scrap booking paper. Trick is to just have fun and embrace the randomness of how it all works. We had some great laughs and a few of the ladies though challenged with the roses stuck to it and produced some real beauties. Then there were a good amount that just blew my mind with how they transformed such a humble media into a lovely work of art.
It was a blast and as always it was a pleasure to be around a great group of smart funny women. Love it!

So I'm working an average Saturday when and average guy and his young daughter come in and are just have an average look around the shop. I tell them to let me know if they have any questions or need any help. "Where are you from?" says the young woman. "I'm from California. Central coast actually" She smiles and looks at her Dad who's picked out a card and is rummaging for change to pay for the card. he says matter of factly "That's where we're from and that's where this cards headed." I'm like "What, no way?" He's like ya my son lives in

San Luis Obispo (the county my home town is in) and we're from San Fransisco originally. But we have lived here 18 years." I'm like "That is so incredible!" he then tells me they just spent the 4th of July in Cayucos (part of the county I'm from) Beach. Then I got a bit emotional. I didn't try to show it but they left I thanked them for coming in and said it was so nice to meet them. I must say I try not to think of home too much so I can't feel the pain. But now I have this lump in my throat and as I post this it's made me long for the salty sea air of Morro Bay and the sunsets, The sunsets i took for granted. there no where in the world with sunsets quite like Morro Bay. Don't get me wrong I get this way when I think of Wellington even after two days. that's how much I love where I live. But it's the first time in a long time I have felt this about home and I don't know why it's effected me so. Maybe its the way the old guy with his steely blue eyes and fishing hat reminded me of my sweet grandpa or the way he rummaged for change like every old man does pointing at the change as he counted it (that too reminded me of my grandpa) or the way he talked of it as though I could hop in the car and go see my friends right now. mmmm....the lump in throat gets bigger.

I am pleased to introduce to you Judith Keylock of Nelson. Her beautiful textile mixed media bird house sculptures are now on exhibit in store.

Her work is to be seen to be admired fully. But not only does Judith make these quirky endeering sculptures she also makes wearable silk and woolen scarves that are jaw droppingly gorgeous. All are hand made, and eco died. Judy was the winner of the 2009 "Changing Threads" national exhibition. Her humbleness is very moving and her passion is evendent in her work. Do pop in to see these lovely works while they are here.

ONE FOR TEA...

For my birthday last month my lovely and very talented friend Emma Spicer gave me what has to be one of the coolest ideas for giving a really unique gift. You take vintage cake tin, fill it with tissue then a lovingly lay a teacup and saucer nested in it and then lots of Lindor chocolates all around. This was such a lovely gift because it was collected up and colour matched. All of these things were recycled items (not the chocs) I use the tin and the cup all the time. They are my special things that only Mum gets to use in the house. I love my special cup it make me feel so pretty. It was made all the more special when my other very talented friend Paula bestowed upon me the most Delicious apple chamomile whole leaf with tea strainer. Try this next time you have a prezzie to buy for a person who has everything. I think its a really special sentiment.

OK so I get to work this morning coffee in hand I am poised at the crossing. Light goes green but I stop dead in my tracks. My stomach sinks and I realize someone has tagged my windows. I can't say i used words my mother would be proud of and I cant say I was very zen about it. I'm human and I work really hard (as do most of you) and to see tagging there for no good reason or merit was just messed up. So with some Eco spray and steel wool pad I went to work. It took some elbow grease for sure. Over the next few hours of my workday I weighed up the tagging debate. Is it ART? Is it Self expression? Is it destruction of property? I think clearly the latter. No one needs to see some punks initials no matter how cleverly configured on a shop window. That's the space I rent to show the world what I want to show.

That MY canvas. Don't get me wrong, I do actually love urban ART and I own pieces from artists who respect that to share your art you display it removably not force it down peoples throat permanently damaging surfaces. I'd be interested to know how any of you feel.

This week thus far has been a realy good week. A possible new house on the horizon, new jewelery instore, stunning flowers from market, Some sun!, and a weekly change up of the displays which I actually love more than anything in my day! so here is a montage of this week so far. Oh and I saw Cemetary Junction with my lovely little friend Paula :) the wall paper alone was enough to keep me happy. The movie was really funny and just a little breath of fresh air. Very much a blokes movie so if you have to drag your man to a movie that is not shooting robots from hell this he will like as an alternate.

New things...

We got the building repainted! Charcoal grey. It was looking really sad. and the top was 100 different patched wood colours. thankfully the landlord let me do it.

I picked up some lovely little treats from the framer for the house. These soda pop lables from the 40's 50's unused $5 for all of them on trade me and had them framed. LOve them in my kitchen. I might have new house to put them in soon. fingers crossed our offer is accepted on a lovely property. "Oh please please please let me get what I want this time"...(the smiths rock)

So hope you have a lovely weekend. Spare a thought for me as I wait anxiously for word on my dream do-up house. eeeek!

Buckle and Bow Winter Beanie!!!

was embelishing a standard winter beanie with scrap fabric and vintagle buckles. Every one of these finished projects I would buy and wear myself. I love winter accesories! This month we guilded plain white plates and transformed them into kitchen Plaques.

"Keep Calm and Eat Cake" was the theme but there were other renditions like Keep Calm and Drink Gin. This was super fun and a bit tricky to do but everyone really went for it. If you attended and would like to email me your project in your abode I'd love to post the pic! Can't wait for next month.

These are MY GIRLS! Newtown school has started an electives program and every Thursday year 5 and 6 kids get to learn an external subject of thier choice. I am teaching handcrafts and these lovely young ladies are my crew. I must tell you that I have never met such a lovely well behaved group of girls and I am proud and privelaged to be taking part in such an amazing and fun workshop. Will post more as we complete. last week we made photo holders from
white or black pipe cleaners that made little branches to place your family pictures in and this week we embroidered flax Kete's with starflower shapes. the girls did front and back and all sizes flowers.
